J. H. Herbst & Co., 24-26 W. 25th St. (2007)

Only a narrow gap between the Arlington Hotel and this loft building allows a glimpse of a couple of readable signs including:

J H / Herbst / & Co / Furriers (click for detail). J. H. Herbst & Co. were located here from 1911 to 1914. The founder was Joseph Henry Herbst (1875-1930). He was the son of Samuel Herbst, also a furrier. They are found in the 1900 U. S. Census living at 19-21 Ave. A near 2nd St. Both Joseph and father were immigrants from Austria in 1898.

From 1923 to 1934 J. H. Herbst & Co. were located at 1237-1239 Broadway. The Digital Collections at the New York Public Library contain at least three images that show Herbst signs at this location. These photos are dated 1926, 1939, and 1940.
